Working for a living? web posted June 6, 2007 EDGEFIELD – EdgefieldDaily.com began getting complaints about the availability of Tax Assessor Kiesha Bryant when taxpayers went to try to get information on their assessment or to meet with her. Some were claiming that Ms. Bryant was gone from the office at least half of the time it was open. The only way to see if readers complaints had any veracity or not was to keep an account of how many days Ms. Bryant was at work in her office. In the month of May Ms. Bryant was absent seven and one half days of the twenty-three days her office was open. According to the monitoring Ms. Bryant was off on May 1, May 11, May 25, and May 29. She was also noted taking off half days on May 10, May 14, and May 23. Two days, May 16 and 17, Ms. Bryant attended a class to learn how to use a calculator. Though not being absent half of the time from her office, Ms. Bryant was absent one third of the time. By missing so much time from work Ms. Bryant is being paid for performing only two-thirds of her required working hours last month. If the trend were as constant as complaints say, and the one-month sampling shows, Ms. Bryant would be paid roughly $17,000 a year for hours she has not worked. Perhaps the sampled month is an anomaly and not representative of the norm. More monitoring of the situation is required so it will be continued for comparison data. Another update on the office will follow at the end of the first quarter of the next fiscal year which ends in September. Numerous disputed assessments are still pending resolution since December with the Tax Assessor’s Office. Many are now filed or being filed to be heard by the Administrative Law Judge. For
