![]() Magistrate clarifies costs in Worthless Check Program web posted June 8, 2006 COUNTY – Edgefield County Magistrate Brenda Carpenter phoned EdgefieldDaily.com to clarify Solicitor Donnie Myers “Worthless Check Program” presentation Tuesday night to the County Council in our report. Solicitor Myers saying the county receives $41 for warrants issued is correct, it was just never stated that the Magistrate’s Office does not charge for the warrant to be issued. The $41 the county receives comes from the $91 court costs charged to the defendant only if the individual is found guilty, Judge Carpenter said. Mr. Myers never made that point clear in his presentation. “I just didn’t want people to think we charged them to issue warrants. We don’t,” Judge Carpenter said adding that she welcomes the Worthless Check Program to Edgefield County. “It has been very successful in Aiken County.” Another aspect of the benefit of the $41 being applied to all bad check processes is the funds can be allocated to the Sheriff’s Office to augment the severe problem of the understaffing of patrol deputies, which will be utilized under the program. Sheriff Adell Dobey said that there is a difference between the deputies that handle civil process papers, such as subpoenas, and a criminal arrest warrant, “Those are generally done by road deputies,” Sheriff Dobey said. That process takes the deputy off patrol for the time it takes to transport and book the individual into the Detention Center rather than the deputy being on patrol practicing proactive law enforcement. In the County’s Fiscal Year 2006-2007 budget the County Council approved two of the requested four deputies for the Sheriff’s Office. To bring the number of deputies actually needed to properly cover the 500 plus square mile county the Sheriff’s Office would need an additional ten deputies. For
