Large controlled burn gets underway today at Lick Fork

web posted June 10, 2009
COUNTY – Anne B. Kiser, the Long Cane District Ranger for Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests, announced a large prescribed burn that will be taking place today in the Lick Fork Lake area. “This is the latest and largest burn we on the Long Cane Ranger District have ever conducted. We are doing it for ecological reasons. This is the time of year when, if left alone, nature would do it for us via lightning. We are attempting to re-create what nature does best. We know that these growing season (or "lightning season") burns control undesirable hardwoods and stimulate grasses in the understory,” she said.

A helicopter will be used for the ignition of the burn. The helicopter will drop small plastic spheres filled with a combustible chemical (potassium permanganate) which, when injected with ethylene glycol, burst into small flames. Firefighters on the ground will monitor the burn and patrol the fire lines and will hand light the fire lines. The burn will be conducted following carefully prepared "burn plans" which prescribe air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, and general atmospheric conditions.

There will be smoke in the air and there could be light smoke in the vicinity of the burn
for a few days after. The public should slow down and turn on headlights if they are driving in smokey conditions.
