Community Emergency Response Team members sought for county

web posted June 12, 2007
COUNTY – The Edgefield County Emergency Management Aministration is seeking individuals that would like to volunteer to become part of the Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) for Edgefield County. EMA Director Mike Casey said the volunteers would be the first line of responders in the event of a mass casualty or disaster situation for the EMA Department to treat “walking wounded” and assisting First Responders, EMS, and Fire Departments responding to an event. “The need for CERT came from 9/11,” Mr. Casey said.

EMA Director Casey said that once EMT’s or Paramedics were treating non-life threatening injuries, more severe injured persons were not being treated during 9/11. “Once an EMT or Paramedic begins treating an injured person they cannot leave.” Having CERT trained responders would allow the minor injuries to be treated by CERT Teams or First Responders and highly trained EMTs or Paramedics could move on to the most critically injured faster.

Those interested would be trained in basic first aid and the procedures of Emergency Management. “It will give people the confidence to step up when it is needed,” Mr. Casey said stressing that CERT trained members would not be replacing First Responders on local Fire Departments. Mr. Casey explained that CERT team members would receive training below that of the 48 hours of training for First Responders.

More information on CERT may be found by following this link or by calling 803-637-4000. First Responders are eligible to be cross-trained as CERT team members Mr. Casey said.
