Two women suffer dog bites in past week
web
posted June 26, 2008
COUNTY – A Merriwether woman and a
Johnston woman are recovering from being bitten by a dog while walking
down the street in their respective neighborhoods. On Tuesday the
Merriwether woman was walking along the 300 block of Mill Creek Drive
when a dog ran out from a residence and into the roadway and bit her on
her hip and buttocks area. She was able to get away from the dog and
returned to her nearby home and called 911.
The woman showed a responding Sheriff’s Deputy the clothing she was
wearing when the biting took place that showed rips and blood stains.
The woman said she was leaving to go to the hospital for treatment.
The owner of the dog was identified and advised of the situation. The
dog’s owner told the deputy, reports state, that she allows her animals
to run free in the neighborhood. She also advised the deputy that she
would be “getting rid” of the dog in question.
A follow up on the case will take place by Friday and the owner may be
facing a charge of allowing domestic animals to run at large.
Late last week a Johnston woman was walking down Walker Street when a
pit bull and another dog began chasing her. One of the dogs bit the
woman on the ankle “to the bone”. She informed a Johnston Police
Officer where the dogs were and what they looked like as she was being
loaded into an ambulance to be transported to the hospital for
treatment.
One of the dogs, considered to be a stray, was captured and taken to
Aiken to be housed and checked for rabies. The owner of the pit bull
was identified and the dog, who appeared friendly, “wagging tail and
jumping around playing”, the reporting officer stated had proper rabies
vaccination tags.
In addition to fines for animal running at large, dog owners can also
face civil penalties for medical bills, time off work, and pain and
suffering of the victim of the bite. In addition to town ordinances on
leash laws, the county also has a leach law that states all animals
should be maintained on the owner’s property.
