Tractor theft stopped by owner

web posted June 29, 2006

COUNTY – A man driving along Highway 25 Tuesday afternoon spotted a truck pulling his tractor. The actual owner of the tractor called the Sheriff’s Office after stopping the two men. The men pulled the tractor back to the owner’s business, located near-by. A Sheriff’s Deputy was waiting when the two men pulled in.

The tractor did not run according to the owner’s statement to police. The driver of the truck used to pull the tractor was identified as Tommy K. Miles, 27 of Carrie Lane. The man driving the tractor was identified as John W. Hightower*, 49, of Bath SC. Mr. Miles told the deputy that a Mr. Brown said he could have the tractor.

After investigating the situation, the deputy arrested Mr. Hightower and Mr. Miles and transported them to the Edgefield County Detention Center for booking. Both men are currently being held on a custody order awaiting formal charges at this writing.

The owner said the value of the tractor would be around $3000 if sold as parts.

* The name of John W. Hightower was given to police at the time of arrest. It was later learned, due to this story, that John Hightower's name was used by his brother,
Anderson Hightower lll. John Hightower is not associated to this incident in any way.
