Storms wreak havoc across the county

web posted June 29, 2010
COUNTY – Severe thunderstorms made their way across Edgefield County Monday afternoon causing downed trees, power outages, roads blocked, flooding, and several homes reported struck by lightening. The storms began moving into the county around 3:30 pm and by 5 pm dispatchers were overwhelmed by calls that kept several fire departments, SCDOT, and Deputies trying to keep up as the storms intensified.

The northern parts of the county around Edgefield and especially Johnston were the first to take the brunt of the storms with reports of trees blocking roadways, power lines down, and transformers on fire. Johnston Fire Firefighters, Police, and Sheriff’s Deputies began responding to calls and advising of the damage.

During the storm the Edgefield County 911 Center was struck by lightening causing temporary loss of some radio functions until backup equipment was brought online minutes later.

Within the hour, the Westside and Merriwether areas were struck by a second storm cell that dropped heavy rains and winds for two hours and ended with a sudden blast of high winds that caused a swath of trees to snap blocking roads and taking down power lines. At least three homes in the area were reported as being struck by lightening, however; no major damage was reported and only one home was reported as having smoke, but no fire, present afterwards.

The major damage was reported in the Merriwether area from Woodlawn Road west, north to Georgia Road, and south and east to Murrah Road.

Aiken Electric Cooperative was left with over 1,000 customers without power until just before 9 pm. South Carolina Electric and Gas, covering the Edgefield and Johnston area, reportedly saw over 2,000 customers left without power after the storm.

Emergency Management Director Mike Casey said most of the damage was found in the Merriwether area. "The 911 center took a lightning hit and the consoles were down for a while but we had a backup system that we used while the consoles were repaired." This was part of the redundancy features installed when Casey chaired the 911 program.

The Merriwether Fire Department brought their dispatch center online during the emergency and helped to relay information to the county control center.

No dollar amount on damage was available, Mr. Casey said.
