Residents call for Administrator’s firing

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted July  18, 2005

EDGEFIELD - Most county residents are furious over the new zoning ordinances and the way they were introduced. However, many feel County Administrator Wayne Adams should be fired over the matter.

Joel Bridges of Merriwether says the actions of the administrator were dishonest and he needs to be removed from his duties. “As far as I am concerned his job is to inform council on what they are voting on and he didn’t do that and he tried to lie to the public too,” Bridges said. The notice of the upcoming public Hearing was worded so to not inform the public of the intentions of the ordinances, to zone the entire county. "I have no faith in him. He is supposed to be there for the whole county, not just the chosen few," Bridges said.

Mr. Carter, who would not give us his first name, said he too feels the council should dismiss Adams. “(Administrator Adams) has done so much against the people of this county and they never fire him, this time he’s gone way too far,” he said.

They are not alone in their opinion. We spoke to over a dozen people and all agreed the actions of Administrator Adams violates his official duties and has created a total mistrust of his ability to function as administrator with honesty or hold the trust of the citizens of the county or the county council.

County Councilmen have told Edgefield Daily.com they were not informed of the intent of the ordinances before voting on them. Administrator Adams has a duty to provide information to council on matters before them. Nadine Horne, who has been lobbying the county to stop a chicken farm from being placed off Courtney Road, told Edgefield Daily.com she supports the ordinances and that Mr. Adams informed her of the implications of the ordinances in earlier interviews.

As Edgefield Daily.com has reported, Administrator Adams told the citizens group from Trenton that zoning was an option to stop the chicken farms but that process was a long and slow process as such would have to come from the planning commission.

To recount his statements they are repeated here:
“To go through the process it could take several months,” Mr. Adams explained as changes have to go through the planning commission before ever being brought before council. After council is presented with the findings it still takes three readings and a public hearing before changes could go into effect.

However, just days later Mr. Adams inserts the two new ordinances at a special called meeting of council and never advertised them as being on the agenda or that they zone the entire county.

Had Edgefield Daily.com not exposed the true intent of the ordinances they could have been passed and the county would have been zoned in just 45 days, not “several months” as Mr. Adams stated previously.

All those we spoke with said they intend to attend the Public Hearing and demand the removal of Mr. Adams from his position as administrator in addition to voicing opposition to the ordinances.
