County adds insult to injury with billing of computer services

web posted July 22, 2006

EDGEFIELD – The computer repairs to Probate Judge Bobby Peeler’s computer was deducted from the budget of the Probate Court. The Probate Court did not contact, hire, nor request the technician used to remove viruses from the computer after “an administrator” disabled all security features of the computer. Edgefield County Council Vice-chairman Willie Bright brought in the technician and the technician is an acquaintance of Council member Everett Kitchens.

County Administrator Wayne Adams claimed in his letters to the Editor’s of both local weekly papers that the county owns, operates, and maintains the computers of the county offices.

Councilman Bright did not notify the Probate Court of the contracted independent computer technician or that he would be requesting access to the computer until they arrived. Judge Peeler did give permission for him to access the computer.

The Edgefield County Administrator has the ultimate authority to delineate where funds are to be deducted for expenses occurred and where they are listed.

At least one county council member has acknowledged that the funds were misappropriated and should have been billed to the county, not the Probate Court.
