Edgefield County Voter Registration asks residents to try new voting machines

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted July  23, 2005

EDGEFIELD - The Edgefield County Voter Registration Office is encouraging county residents to come by the Voter Registration Office, Room 106 in the lower level of the Courthouse, to get acquainted with the new voting machines the county has purchased.

The new machines, which were delivered in January, are much smaller than the old voting booths the county has used for the past several years. Angel Miles of voter registration let Edgefield Daily.com try out one of the new machines. She said the office is asking everyone to drop by and try them out before the next election cycle.

One feature of the machines is going to solve a problem some candidates have complained about in the past, write in votes. Historically voters who wanted to write in a candidate had to leave the voting booth and get a pencil and a piece of paper from poll workers in order to have the vote counted. Many people have complained that the necessary pencils and paper were not always available.

The new machines allow voters to write in a candidates name via a computer screen fashioned like a keyboard. Using touch screen technology a voter can “type in” the name of the candidate right into the machine.
