Hispanics continue to top list of
unlicensed and uninsured drivers Edgefielddaily.com web posted July 26, 2005 EDGEFIELD - As Edgefield Daily.com has followed arrests in the county, Hispanics continue to rise in the percentage of unlicensed and uninsured drivers in our area. Edgefield Daily.com is not singling out a particular race, however we are concerned when the smallest segment of our residents are being arrested for indicators of illegal residency. The Federal Government tells citizens to be on alert and report those who are in our country illegally. However, when they do, the Federal Government turns its back on local law enforcement and the citizens. Since Edgefield Daily.com has been posting the arrests in the county, the rate of such offences has grown from a 40% to 58% and is set to go higher for Hispanics. According to reports the majority of these fines are paid in advance by the employers of the individuals arrested. Among the usual charges are no drivers’ license, no insurance, improper or no vehicle license, and DUI. What is happening in other rural counties such as ours results in the deaths of upstanding citizens when encountering the same dilemma. Scott Gardner, 33, was killed and his wife was critically injured in an accident last week caused by an illegal immigrant with a prior drunk-driving record. Ramiro Gallegos, 25, was driving while impaired when he swerved and slammed into the Gardners' station wagon in North Carolina. Gallegos was using the same process that so many in out county use, counting on the lack of federal government deportation enforcement to remain driving regardless of local law. The pattern of his record fits very well to the record of those arrested for similar offenses in Edgefield County. The South Carolina Highway Patrol, the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Department, and all local police departments suffer the same roadblocks to curbing illegal aliens in our communities. The “Fed’s won’t get involved” one law enforcement officer told Edgefield Daily.com. Farmers are the main draw for illegal aliens most reports conclude. Since farming is a business that runs on slim profit margins and a bad stretch of weather can make or break a season; the lure of cheap labor is too much to resist some say. Edgefield County is “prime” as an area those who enter our country illegally look for. Clyde Gurosik, who owns and operates Gurosik’s Berry Plantation told Edgefield Daily.com in earlier interviews that he uses only documented workers, “They come for the season, they are reported as being here, and they go home (to Mexico) when the season is over,” he said. However, “not all farmers do that,” Gurosik said. Many in local government agree there is a problem, and even local media personalities comment to each other about the arrest record showing the “usual no drivers license” arrests. Edgefield Daily.com has spoken to Edgefield County Sheriff Adell Dobey on the matter and he has stated that without the support of federal authorities there is little he can do to curb the influx of undocumented workers. Most current reports from intelligence agencies say that the greatest threat America faces is Middle Eastern terrorist posing as Hispanics to gain entry and acclimation into the community and that the terrorists are using the Mexican border and the illegal smugglers to gain entry into the US. Edgefield Daily.com will continue to follow the increasing numbers that suggest a growing problem until our local, state, and federal elected officials begin to take the issue seriously.
