Hispanics continue to top list of unlicensed drivers web posted July 31, 2006 COUNTY – Hispanics continue to make up an overwhelming majority of arrests for driving without a license and driving with open containers of alcohol. With Hispanics, according to Census numbers, making up less than 2% of our county population they account for almost 70% of the listed offenses. Last week four traffic stops resulted in the arrest of seven Hispanic men for those charges, and that was just in Johnston. Law enforcement is doing what they can to arrest those responsible for such crimes and local magistrates have to release them on bond. Many times the employer of the Hispanics pays the fines and the event is forgotten, until they are arrested again and the performance is repeated. On Saturday, July 15, a Hispanic man that had just been released from the Edgefield Detention Center on assault charges struck a car on Highway 25, injuring two people. He fled the scene after admitting to at least two witnesses he had been drinking and several beers were found in the small SUV he was driving. As of last week, he has still not been arrested for the crime. Over the last year and a half, the problem continues to grow rather than subside. Police openly admit that most, if not all, are illegal aliens but say their hands are tied due to the inaction of the federal government. Deportation of illegals is not a priority they say. Congress and President Bush posture with ways of dealing with illegal aliens crossing the border but for the last twenty years there is no indication of the tidal wave of Mexican and Central American people entering the country. The Township of Riverside New Jersey has found a way to deal with the problem, holding those who hire or rent homes to illegal aliens responsible with fines of $1,000 and the loss of their business licenses. Many other towns and cities across the country have also passed similar legislation. For
