County will rebuild building destroyed by fire in new location web posted August 8, 2007 EDGEFIELD – Chances are Edgefield County will not rebuild the former Senior Citizens Council Building but will elect to build a new building at another location. John Jervey, Claims Manager for the South Carolina Counties Property and Liability Trust, was in Edgefield to explain the options available to the Edgefield County Council Tuesday night. Mr. Jervey said that taking the cash value of the building would not be in the best interest of the county since the actual value of the building was on the “low end” due to the age of the building. To rebuild, either at the same location or another, was estimated to be a settlement closer to a half million dollars. Mr. Jervey said construction costs to replace the 6,650 square foot building would range between $65 and $85 per foot, “an average figured on $70 a square foot would be $465,000,” Mr. Jervey said adding the costs could be a little more or a little less. Presently the insurance company is having contractors estimate the reconstruction costs and Mr. Jervey advised that the county also have a local contractor work up an estimate as well for comparison. Once a figure is agreed upon the county could take a “lump sum payment” and have that money placed in the general fund that could then be used to construct a building at any location. Edgefield County Council Chairman Monroe Kneece agreed saying the county “needs to look out for the future”. Kneece said The Senior Citizens Council is presently constructing their own building and this would give the county an opportunity to move some county offices to another central location. As an example Kneece named the Building and Planning Department that the county is leasing office space at a cost of $1,200 a month. Mr. Jervey said most of the claims on contents have been settled and costs were not expected to be more than ten to eleven thousand dollars. The new location was not revealed by the county council.
