County Councilman Dorn rebukes Magistrates for closing office for lunch

web posted August 8, 2007
EDGEFIELD – Edgefield County Councilman Norman Dorn took the floor at the Edgefield County Council meeting Tuesday night to express his displeasure that the Magistrate’s Office closes for lunch each day while people are left “standing in 100-degree heat waiting on them to return from lunch.” Mr. Dorn said he did not understand why the entire office has to go to lunch at the same time and that no other county office closes for lunch.

“What if everybody decided to close for lunch?” Mr. Dorn asked. Dorn said the office is closed for an hour to an hour and a half while citizens stand around waiting to conduct their business.

Chairman Kneece stated that he would like to let Administrator John Pettigrew speak to the Magistrates to see if this was an isolated event or an every day occurrence. Councilman Dorn stated he understood it was everyday and wanted to know if the county council had the authority to make the office available during all normal business hours.

Chairman Kneece stated he wanted to look into the matter because some offices are run by elected officials and they set their own office hours. However, Magistrates are not elected they are appointed by the Governor.

Administrator Pettigrew said he would speak with Judges Davis and Carpenter and report back at the September meeting.
