Grassroots groups want citizens to attend
Public Hearings Tuesday night Edgefielddaily.com web posted August 19, 2005 EDGEFIELD - Walter Dahlgren of SCNoTax.com and several other grassroots organizations like Stoptax.org have joined forces to make sure the people of South Carolina understand what the Public Hearing on Tuesday night, August 23, is all about, and it is not just tax reform; it is the elimination of property taxes forever. The Public Hearing is being held by a joint group of SC State Senators from the Judiciary and Finance committees on Tuesday, August 23, 2005 at Strom Thurmond High School from 6 to 9 pm. Mr. Dahlgren spoke to Edgefield Daily.com today and said his delegation was in Edgefield meeting with business owners and farmers as well as placing signs along the roadway to attract attention to what they say will eliminate all property taxes for South Carolina residents. “We support a Bill, Bill S 880, introduced by Senator David Thomas and it would eliminate all property taxes and replace them with a three per cent sales tax,” Mr. Dahlgren said. The three cent tax would be in addition to the state five cent sales tax. In addition to eliminating property taxes the bill and Constitutional Amendments would tack away local school taxes as well. “”Roughly twenty per cent of sales tax revenues come from tourism,” Mr. Dahlgren said and those monies should be put to use for all the citizens he says. Another provision of the Bill is to lower taxes on non-prepared food at the grocery stores from five cents to two cents on the dollar. The Bill also reduces non-residency property and business property taxes by a whopping 20% and freezes millage rates at 2004 levels. Mr. Dahlgren said they attended the Public Hearing in Charleston where the newspapers said about fifty people would show up to find over four hundred in attendance and over fifty-six speakers. “We think it is important that people understand what this is all about,” he said. The mainstream media seems to be downplaying the importance of the meetings. “We noticed (The Citizen News) ran a story on it and stated Senators were coming to the area but didn’t tell anyone what it was all about,” Mr. Dahlgren said. “We wanted to get the message out and were told to contact (Edgefield Daily.com) by a local businessman.” Mr. Dahlgren encourages citizens to review the Bill and their website as well for a more comprehensive look at the Senators who voted against letting the issue go before the voters in the last general election. Among those listed on the website as voting against the measure was Sen. Tommy Moore, an announced candidate for governor in 2006. “Property taxes are doubling every five or six years, it won’t be long before you will not be able to afford the home you have lived in all your life because of the taxes,” Mr. Dahlgren said. He said the tired excuses and patch-job repairs to the tax structure have failed and for once the legislative body needs to fix it for good, “they keep trying to say it is getting better but taxes and fees keep going up, SPLOST goes up, it is out of control.” An added bonus to the new tax system would be that those who are in our country, state, or county, illegally would be paying taxes they ordinarily would escape while sending their children to local schools for free. The reduced tax rates for businesses would result in a 20% increase in funds to the companies through tax reductions and that money would be used to grow local businesses and employment, “It is a win/win,” Mr. Dahlgren said. However the Bill is meeting opposition from Senators who see it as a way to steal power from government and place it in the hands of the citizen. “Who they are,” Mr. Dahlgren said, “is important for people to know.” A similar sales tax idea is being proposed on a national level by US Sen. John Linder which would remove all income taxes, social security taxes, and payroll taxes.
