Candidates
report thefts, vandalism of political signs
web
posted September 5, 2007
COUNTY – Republican candidates for the
District 25 Senate seat left open by the resignation of Democrat Tommy
Moore are complaining of political signs vanishing or being vandalized
in Edgefield County as the September 18 primary draws near. On Tuesday
candidate Bill Hixon called to report one of his political signs being
vandalized and candidate Chris Corley wrote to EdgefieldDaily.com to
report his signs being stolen, and in one case being placed on private
property in what he described as an attempt to cause discourse with the
property owner.
“Over the past few weeks I have received numerous calls from voters in
the Merriweather and Sweetwater areas of Edgefield, as well as
McCormick and Saluda counties regarding the lack of signs. They
question why I do not have signs in those areas. This issue is not due
to lack of concern for the area, but to theft. I have put many, many
signs in these areas. Unfortunately, they disappear. A total 150 yard
signs and about 20 large signs have been removed. Signs have been
stolen out of my supporters’ front yards. Just last week a number of
signs were stolen and tossed into my Mother in Law's yard,” Mr. Corley
wrote.
Mr. Corley continued, “Someone even went as far to remove one of my
large signs and move it onto private property in Edgefield. When
I received a call from an angry constituent about the removal of sign
we (my team and I) had no clue how or when it was placed there.”
Mr. Corley and Mr. Hixon are not the only two candidates complaining
and the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office has stepped up patrols in the
area. Supporters of Shane Massey have also sent reports of signs being
removed or run over in the Merriwether area in several locations.
Authorities have no leads as to who is behind the recent rash of
political sign thefts and vandalisms.
