County Convenience Center issues addressed Edgefielddaily.com web posted September 21, 2005 COUNTY – Dozens of readers over the last few months have written Edgefield Daily.com with questions, complaints, and story ideas on the Convenience Centers around the county. Some were frustrated that when they took large items like hot water heaters or dryers the containers would be full or complained of people outside of the county using the facilities. Edgefield Daily.com began looking into the matter and contacted Tim Fox of Tri-County Waste who oversees the sites for three counties; Edgefield, McCormick, and Saluda. Mr. Fox explained that he was aware of some of the problems and said that appliances and other such items were taken away when the containers were full. Sometimes they fill up quicker than expected. “We don’t have a set schedule on the metal recovery items and sometimes they get too full before we can get them hauled away,” he said. With limited numbers of drivers to haul for the entire tri-county area, it does happen that sometimes residents will have to be redirected to the next closest facility. “We try very hard not to let that happen,” Mr. Fox said. On the upside Mr. Fox said he has not had complaints of the regular trash bins being overfilled unless there is a power outage or they have equipment problems. “That happens from time to time,” he said but that it was just part of providing the service or doing business, “sometimes things break.” Leaving items on the ground is not permitted Mr. Fox said due to DHEC regulations and the fact that the personnel at the Convenience Centers are senior citizens. “DHEC mandates how we have to handle certain materials,” and that they could not have attendants moving heavy items for liability and workman’s compensation reasons, “it has a lot to do with risk management.” Merriwether Councilman Joel Hudson has suggested making the disposal sites of such objects available with ramps or depressed areas so residents can offload items down into containers rather than having to pile them up. Aiken County does just that to make it easier on the residents who bring such items to their centers. When asked about people from outside of Edgefield County using the facility and not paying the $80 a year fee Mr. Fox stated, “we know it happens,” but did not believe it was a very large problem except for the Merriwether area. “Merriwether is the busiest site in Edgefield County,” he said adding that it has the most equipment. “We try to address the busiest sites with adequate equipment,” and that he believed they have provided that everywhere. To those who come in from outside the county that is an issue for the county to address, not Tri-County Waste. “Each county is different as to how they address those problems,” he said. Some residents complained that certain Edgefield County residents do not pay the fee and still use the facility. The residents along Gregory Lake Road that were annexed into the city of North Augusta and were exempted by the County Council from having to pay the fee since their trash is picked up by North Augusta, they say, still use the Convenience Centers for large items not picked up by the City or just for convenience sake. Edgefield Daily.com will follow up with more on the county’s position to the concerns in a later report. Those who have problems or concerns about any of the Convenience Centers are asked to call Mr. Fox at 803-275-5608. “If they have a problem I am the one that can give them the answers or provide them with adequate information,” he said. For issues involving personnel matters call Ms. Pugh at 803-637-5326. “We want to provide the best service possible,” Mr. Fox said.
