Traffic stops across county result in arrests

COUNTY – Traffic stops continue to add to the number of those arrested and this past weekend was no different.  At least seven people landed in jail with charges ranging from DUI, drugs, and one for an outstanding arrest warrant.

On Friday night a Sheriff’s Deputy stopped to assist a motorist which a car that broke down on Augusta Road near Planner Road just before 8:30 pm. While checking the drivers license of James Jordon Jr., 46, of Edgefield, it was found he had an outstanding warrant for worthless checks. He was taken into custody along with his passenger, Bettis Prescott Jr., 47, also of Edgefield, who was charged with an open container of beer.

Later a deputy spotted a black moped on Highway 25 near Jacob McKie Road and found Dexter Keith Jones, 45 was driving while intoxicated. He was arrested and booked for his third DUI. A breathalyzer test showed his blood alcohol level to be .11, above the legal limit.

Saturday afternoon and Edgefield Police Officer stopped 25 year-old Clifton Alexander Murrell after driving 50 in a 35 mile per hour zone. The officer reported that Mr. Murrell seemed “nervous”. Afterwards, after consenting to a search, he was found to have a pistol under his seat and was in possession of marijuana. He was arrested and booked into the Edgefield County Detention Center.

Two Edgefield men were arrested at a license checkpoint on Woodyard Road at James Drive when deputies smelled a “strong odor of marijuana” coming from the car. After the driver was told to pull to the side of the road and after giving officers consent to search the car marijuana and a pipe were found inside. Sawyer McKenzie Barrow, 18 and Morris Daniel Miles, 22, both of Edgefield, were arrested and charged with simple possession of marijuana.

On Sunday afternoon a Sheriff’s Deputy clocked a red Pontiac Firebird traveling 61 in a 45 mile per hour zone. After stopping the driver, Victor Villalbazo, 25, of Beech Island gave the deputy a faked driver’s license. He was summarily arrested for driving without a license and speeding and booked into the Edgefield County Detention Center.

This report does not include all those arrested for various charges during the weekend resulting from traffic stops.
