Over half of screened evacuees entering South Carolina have criminal backgrounds

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted September 26, 2005

SOUTH CAROLINA – According to a reports in the Charleston Post and Courier and WorldNetDaily, South Carolina got more than expected with the flood of evacuees from Hurricane Katrina; criminals. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division screened a sampling of the evacuees and found over half of the sampling had criminal backgrounds. 301 of the 547 had records for anything from petty theft to rape and two had outstanding warrants for burglary.

SLED Inspector Richard Hunton said most of the crimes were minor offenses and not very recent. However, there were a number with convictions for more serious crimes like rape and aggravated assault. The two men who had outstanding warrants were not arrested because the states of Oregon and Washington did not want to extradite the two.

South Carolina currently has around 6,000 evacuees in the state. If the average of those is anything like the reported 57% found to have criminal backgrounds by SLED, South Carolina could have as many as 3420 new criminals to deal with. Only those evacuated by federal authorities were screened.
