Residents
warned of potential scams
web
posted September 27, 2007
COUNTY – Edgefield County continues to be
just as susceptible to scams as any big city, and the Sheriff’s Office
is constantly getting reports and information of attempts to steal
money or personal information from local residents. Edgefield County
Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Randy Doran said they have reports ranging
from Wal-Mart money orders for up to $750 to very real looking checks
for thousands of dollars being offered if the soon-to-be victim agrees
to deposit them and send back a small percentage. “They are fake”, Inv.
Doran said.
The scam reported most recently is a letter to a local resident,
accompanied by a check for $2,900, saying they are the winner of a
drawing and stated, “you must call to confirm that you have received
the letter and the enclosed check,” The realistic looking check, which
in this case was payable from “Southern Rods & Parts, Inc.” and
drawn on a bank in Greenville, SC is actually fake Inv. Doran said.
“They (the victim) is responsible for the money sent by the bank,” to
the scammers.
“Most of the time they are out of the country,” Doran said, “and we
have no way to prosecute.”
Another scam, reported to EdgefieldDaily.com and subsequently to the
Sheriff’s Office, was a call from someone claiming to confirm you being
chosen for a jury selection. During the “confirmation” they try to
elicit your personal information and may threaten arrest for
non-compliance. Any such call is to be reported to the Sheriff’s Office
at once.
The Clerk of Court’s Office will notify any and all jury members by
mail and does not require or ask for any personal information to be
given over the phone. Members of a jury are to arrive at the appointed
time with their notice.
Inv. Doran said Wal-Mart money orders are also popular. The scammers
will convince an unsuspecting person to cash the money orders because
they are in another country that does not
honor the American dollar, and will give the person cashing the
money order part of the money if they forward American dollars to them
in exchange. That should be the first “tip off” because if the US
dollar were not recognized then sending US dollars would also be
useless.
In the event you should receive such an offer you should contact your
local law enforcement agency.
