Wrong Way Driver Arrested for DUI

web posted September 27, 2012

COUNTY LINE – Edgefield County Dispatchers began receiving 911 calls just before 11 pm Tuesday night of a vehicle driving on the wrong side of Highway 25 causing dangerous conditions for motorists. A nearby Sheriff's Deputy spotted the car pulled off the southbound lane in the wrong direction with the headlights on, the car running and in gear, with the driver leaning on the driver's window unresponsive.

After several attempts to rouse the driver, he finally awoke and rolled down the window and was instructed to turn off the car and hand the deputy the keys, which he did. He was identified as 34-year-old John M. Bannister, of Graniteville and told the deputy he was on his way home from "the bar", later identified as Drifters near Stephens Road on Highway 25.

According to the incident report, Bannister said he was on his way home and pulled over to "take a nap". When asked how much he had to drink he stated, "Too (bleeping) much to drive".

A State Trooper arrived to take over the investigation and Bannister was booked into custody for DUI.  His car was towed from the scene. No court date was available.
