County, School District Mourns Passing of Student
web posted October 1, 2012 7:50 pm
COUNTY – Strom Thurmond High School
students were mourning the loss of one of their own after the sudden
death of 15-year-old Tyler Wayne Morgan after he was discovered
unconscious and unresponsive on the floor of his bedroom floor on
Sunday. He was pronounced dead at his home a short time later.
Edgefield County Coroner Thurmond Burnett said the cause of death in
undetermined at this time.
Edgefield County School Superintendent Greg Anderson stated, “It is
hard to find words to say at a time like this. We consider each and
every student in our district special to us and so this has been an
especially sad day for the students, teachers and administrators.”
Anderson added that Tyler has been attending county schools since his
Counselors were available at Strom Thurmond High School for Tyler’s
fellow students on Monday to provide assistance during this time,
Anderson said in a prepared release.
The Strom Thurmond Student Council has requested that the students wear
the colors red and black to school in honor of Tyler since he was an
avid Georgia Bulldog sports fan.
Out of respect for the family, Anderson has requested that students and
employees of the school district refrain from speculating upon the
cause of death. After having conversations with Coroner Thurmond
Burnett, Anderson suggested that people could use their time more
wisely by offering condolences and prayers for the family.
“Obviously, this is a very difficult time for Tyler’s parents and
family and so we hope that anyone associated with the school district
will open their hearts with love and compassion for them.”
Mercantile Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation
will be this Wednesday, October 3, 2012 between the hours of 5–8 p.m.
at Mercantile Funeral Home. The funeral will be the following day on
Thursday, October 4 beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Mercantile Funeral Home
followed by graveside services at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
An autopsy performed on Monday did not reveal any answers in Tyler's
death. Final results are not expected to be available, "for several
weeks," Coroner Burnett said Monday.
Tyler was a Sophomore at Strom Thurmond.
