$30,000 record book reported stolen from County Archives

web posted October 12, 2006

EDGEFIELD – A historical record book, valued at $30,000, has been stolen from the Edgefield County Archives. The book contained the original records from the first five years of General Sessions Court from 1785 through 1790 in Edgefield County. ”It is a huge loss,” County Archivist Patricia Glenn said Wednesday. The record books are kept in a vault in the County Administration Building.

Ms. Glenn said the last time the book was used for research was August 3, 2006. It was not discovered missing until September 11 when the same researcher came to do more research. Ms. Glenn said she began looking for the book thinking it may have been misplaced, but when it could not be found anywhere she notified the Edgefield Police Department of the theft.

The book contained the records of the first five years of General Sessions Court in Edgefield County and is valued between $30,000 and $50,000 Ms. Glenn said. The records are duplicated in WPA books and microfilm. It is unknown who may have taken the book or why. “I take it (the theft) personal,” Ms. Glenn said, “I am responsible for all the records and I watch everything very closely.” Ms. Glenn said new security measures are being taken to avoid another incident from occurring.

The state has also been notified of the theft and state agencies follow internet sites to see if stolen items end up on internet auction sites.

During routine property checks by the Edgefield Police on Tuesday night, an officer reported the Administration Building was left unlocked when he checked the doors just after 10 pm. The building was secured by the officer.
