Happy Halloween! Trick or treating safety
tips Edgefielddaily.com web posted October 31, 2005 COUNTY – Halloween is upon us and children will be dressing in their costumes and going from door to door trick or treating tonight. Area towns are asking that children seek the candy and fun times between the hours of 6:30 pm and 8:30 pm. Area residents are asked to reduce their speeds on local roads and be aware of the children who sometimes go unsupervised. Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie Carter said the town will be reducing speed limits during the hours children will be on the streets. Parents are asked to accompany their children, carry flashlights, and make sure children in costumes are visible to headlights. All black costumes are not suggested. Most area towns suggest only children 12 and under go trick or treating. Children should not approach homes with no lighting available or with the front porch lights off. Below are more trick or treating safety rules: Always use common sense. Young children should always go trick-or-treating with an adult. Never trick-or-treat alone. Have at least 2 buddies go with you. Plan your entire route and make sure your family knows what it is. Make sure that you are wearing a flame retardant costume. Wait until you get home and your parents check your candy before you eat it. Be very cautious of strangers. Accept treats only in the doorway. Never go inside a house. Be sure and say thank you for your treats. Don't play near lit jack-o-lanterns. Visit only houses where the lights are on. Walk, Do not run. Walk on sidewalks and driveways. Cross the street at the corner or in a crosswalk. Take a cellular phone with you if possible. Wear a watch. Carry a flashlight.
