BBB
warns of scams using their name
web
posted October 31, 2007
COUNTY – The BBB has received several
complaints from businesses and consumers about a spoofing scam using
the BBB name and a false FTC e-mail address to entice recipients to
access potentially damaging hyperlinks and attachments. The message
reads: “A complaint has been filled against you and the company you are
affiliated to by Mr. George Hanson and sent to Federal Trade Commission
by fax, in witch he's claiming that he has been cheated by you and your
company in paying a greater amount of money than the one appearing on
the invoice you gave him for using your services.
”The complaint states he contacted your company on MON,22 OCT 2007,
trying to solve this situation without interference from any
Governmental Institution , but your company refused to take action. On
WED,24 OCT 2007, the complaint was sent by fax to Federal Trade
Commission and we forwarded it to Internal Revenue
Service and Better Business Bureau.”
The e-mail reply address is a fake and may appear to be from
frauddep@ftc.gov or other fictitious e-mail addresses.
If you have received a fraudulent e-mail, do NOT click on any of the
links or open any attachments. Please help us in our work with the
authorities by forwarding the e-mail and its headers to phishing@cbbb.bbb.org. Once
you have forwarded the message, delete the message.
None of the BBB’s computers or e-mail systems is involved in this hoax
and the attack has not affected the computer systems of the BBB or
compromised any BBB-held data. The BBB System and authorities are
working together to stop these continued attacks.
