"Four Million Steps"

Contributed by Tony Mercier
web posted October 31, 2008
GUEST ARTICLE – On Wednesday I was heading to lunch in Edgefield. As I was going down Hwy 25 I noticed a man in Edgefield running with a cart, and a sign that said four million steps. I admit though curious I kept driving wondering what this guy was doing. After my lunch that lasted over an hour I headed back toward North Augusta to my place of business, North Augusta Rock-n-Turf, I noticed this guy again fixing to pass my destination. I pulled over on the side of the road so that when he approached I could speak with him and satisfy my curiosity.

I found out his name was Tommy Neeson, and that his journey began in Bangor Maine and that he was running to Miami Florida where his journey will end after 2300 miles and four million steps. He stated that he was raising money for the Ronald McDonald House and handed me a business card that had his web address www.runnerssociety.com . He then told me that he was doing this to raise money for families for the Ronald McDonald house and that they had helped him with his daughters fight with cancer.

Randi, his daughter, lost her battle with cancer in 1999. Since then Tommy has raised thousands of dollars for the Ronald McDonald House by breaking a record time while doing a 50K treadmill run. I asked him if he was excepting donations as he ran and I gave him what I had on me at the time, which I admit wasn’t much.

Later when I got home I went to his website very impressed by our conversation and read the whole story, and in doing so, I was inspired to do more by donating additional money to his cause. I and am writing this with the hope that everyone who reads it will visit his website and be inspired to do the same. You will find out how you can make donations on his website, track his route and keep up with where he is and going to be, and learn more about what he is doing. Visit www.runnerssociety.com
