County connections come to light in murder, shootings, in North Augusta
web posted November 23, 2005 COUNTY – William (Bill) Powell Jr., 61, of North Augusta, was killed in a senseless attack on Tuesday morning outside the North Augusta Huddle House during his daily routine of having coffee with fellow preacher Rev. Earl Carter of Little Horse Creek Baptist Church in Graniteville, who is recovering from his gunshot wounds suffered in the attack. What so many in the county did not know is the connections almost all involved had in Edgefield County. Mr. Powell was a former member of Sweetwater Baptist Church before entering the ministry and has family connections to the Merriwether Community. Nora Powell Korrek, of Edgefield, wrote EdgefieldDaily.com to express her thankfulness for coverage of the event in hopes of catching the suspect involved. Mrs. Korrek said her cousin, "Bill" Powell, “was a very loving man and enjoyed his family from his wife (Tater) Mary Alice to his daughters Beth and Laura,” adding that Mr. Powell, “did not stop there he made sure he was in constant contact with his extended family cousins aunts etc.. He will be missed and he did indeed touch the lives in a most positive way within this community,” she said. Mrs. Ida Mae Heath, of Johnston, was reported to be the woman the killer ended up stealing a car from after the shooting. She was unharmed in the attack. She has not been able to be contacted. Mr. Powell’s “coffee buddy” was the Rev. Earl Carter, a personal life long friend of the Editor of EdgefieldDaily.com and many in the Baptist Church Community of the Merriwether and local area. Rev. Earl Carter has undergone surgery for his wounds suffered in the attack and was said to be resting comfortably but still in serious to critical condition at MCG. EdgefieldDaily.com would like to ask all our readers to pray for comfort for the Powell family in their loss and prayers of Thanksgiving for those who were wounded or spared in the senseless attack. May the individual responsible be caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for his crimes. For
