Sarah’s Santa preparing for Christmas with annual yard sale

web posted November 24, 2008
COUNTY – As families begin preparing for Thanksgiving, some of Santa’s Elves are busy gearing up for Sarah’s Santa for the twelfth year in a row. Founder Debbie Courtney said she was looking, “to visit any church that will have me to tell them about our program. “ Last year Sarah’s Santa delivered gifts and stockings to over 140 local children, including hygiene items, a new coat, and a gift from their letter to Santa.  “We want to make sure they have something to help them stay clean, something to keep them warm, and something fun,” Ms. Courtney said as the group gathered last year to sort out presents.

The group will be holding its annual Yard Sale on December 6 but with a new location this year, the Edgefield American Legion Hut. “We are planning a fun fest for the children and cooking hamburger and hot dogs for lunch,” Ms. Courtney said. The previous years the event was held at JET Middle School.  “We have moved it to town in hopes to draw a larger crowd.” All proceeds go towards Sarah’s Santa.

The Yard Sale and Fun Fest will feature games, prizes, Face Painting, Cotton Candy, Hamburgers/Hot Dogs, Raffles, Popcorn, and Bake Sale and more. The elves would like the whole family to join them for lunch, find great deals, and have fun while helping others have a great Christmas. Santa’s elves will be collecting new unwrapped toys for the needy in the Edgefield, Johnston, and Trenton Community.

Sarah’s Santa which started off providing gifts to just eleven children and has increased over ten-fold. Ms. Courtney said she and her daughter Sarah organize the event each year and have devised a system to manage the large number of gifts they handle. Though some gifts, such as toys are donated, Ms. Courtney said that monetary donations are better. “We have the list of the items the children would like to receive,” Courtney said. “That allows us to fill more of the children’s wishes if we shop from the lists.”

“Help Santa’s elves bring the joy of Christmas to those who may not otherwise see a Christmas present with their name on it,” under the tree Ms. Courtney said. For more information or to make a donation please call 803- 275-1997 or 275-1677.
