Scammers Target Local Computer Users

web posted November 27, 2012

COUNTY – Over the last few months scammers claiming to be from "Windows"  are calling unexpected computer users to claim that their computers are sending out large amounts of spam email and are requesting payment to "fix" the problem that does not exist. When the caller is challenged they resort to vulgar attacks, including calling their intended victim's "Obama n*****s" and "SOB's" among other vile names.

They block their numbers from caller ID which shows up as "restricted" or "private caller". Our advice; if you get a call from such a listing - don't answer. If you do answer and hear a voice with a foreign accent, hang up at once and do not provide them with any personal information.

A four minute recorded conversation from the scammers is being provided to the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office for information. The calls are most likely coming from outside of the US making law enforcement action impossible.

A copy of the recording is not being provided to the public due to the graphic nature of the content of the call.

Edgefield Daily reminds readers that there is no such company as "Windows" and any call suggesting that because you have a computer running Microsoft Windows ® that may be infected with a virus is better left to your anti-virus software, not the scammer. Microsoft will not contact you by phone to inform you your computer is infected with a virus.

You can eliminate receiving such calls by putting a restriction on calls you receive from unidentified callers with your phone carrier. Contact them for more information.
