![]() Eleven arrested in traffic stops over holiday weekend web posted November 28, 2006 COUNTY – Routine patrols by local police and Sheriff’s Deputies paid off for citizens as dangerous drivers, drunk drivers, and even drug dealers were removed from county roads over the weekend. Beginning on Friday and ending Sunday night, at least eleven arrests were made by local law enforcement agencies police reports show. Friday night around 10:30 pm a Sheriff’s Deputy traveling on Addison Street in Johnston noticed a blue 1987 Cadillac with no tag light and initiated a traffic stop when the driver suddenly tried to speed away. A Johnston Police Officer assisted the deputy and stopped the car on Parker Street. When the car stopped the driver got out of the car and tried to walk away until ordered by officers to get back inside of the vehicle, which he refused to do. As officers approached the man threw an open beer to the ground and stated he would just stand where he was. A dollar bill, reports show, was found on the front seat containing a white substance which later tested positive for cocaine as well as marijuana. Benjamin Lee Moton, 40, was arrested and charged with DUI, driving under suspension, open container of beer, possession of cocaine, and possession of marijuana and booked into the Edgefield County Detention Center. A similar situation arose as a deputy patrolled Cold Springs Road just before 10 pm Saturday and initiated a traffic stop near Key Road. As the deputy approached the car the passenger was observed to open his door and place a cup in the door jam. When the deputy approached the man reportedly admitted it contained liquor. As the man stepped out of the vehicle the deputy reported seeing him throw a “green leafy substance onto the ground”. At that time, Johnnie Lee Snodgrass, 40, was arrested. Mr. Snodgrass then reportedly tried to cover two other small bags of marijuana with his feet, which was also recovered. Inside the truck another bag was discovered which the driver, Retha Malina Dasher, 35, admitted was hers according to police reports. Mr. Snodgrass was charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute and the open container of alcohol. Ms. Dasher was arrested for simple possession of marijuana. The growing Hispanic community also accounted for several arrests during the time frame including two arrested when a deputy noticed a green Ford Taurus traveling north on Highway 25 weaving across the entire lane and into oncoming traffic. When the deputy stopped the car the passenger exited the car and tried to run away. Being intoxicated, reports indicate, he fell and was quickly apprehended. The driver was asked to exit the vehicle at which time he did, reports show, and was, “unable to stand on his own”. The passenger, Silvino Ventura, 44, was arrested for disorderly conduct and gross intoxication but booked only on the conduct charge. The driver, Jonguin Jose Vidot Rosado, 22, tested for a blood alcohol content of .18, more than twice the legal limit and charged with DUI, operating an uninsured vehicle, and failure to acquire a valid tag.
