Marines “Special Ops” to train in county with civilians
web
posted December 3, 2008
COUNTY – The Marines are coming to
Edgefield County for training exercises that will include some local
participation to train Maries as part of a rapid response Special
Operations in the event of a military emergency or terrorist attack.
Chris Young, (CTR) with the IW branch from Camp Lejeune, NC explained
to the county council that the exercises will be taking place in five
counties, including Edgefield County in early April, mostly on Sumter
National Forest lands.
The training will be “low level training” of about 60 Marines and up to
120 other military personnel. By low level training there will be no
heavy artillery or tanks used during the training. There will also be
no “live fire” used only blank munitions.
The training is “specifically designed” to teach combat troops how to
come into established areas with civilian populations, religions, and
local governments and learn how to work with them to rebuild their area
after an attack. Mr. Young said a lot of this training is useful in
areas such as Iraq and Afghanistan.
A lot of the training will be “walking in the woods on patrols and
skirmishes and ambushes”, Young said.
The training could obviously be done on a military training facility,
but it is important that the exercise involve contact with the civilian
population. “We want to integrate with the public,” for a more
realistic scenario. They are currently seeking private landowners and
volunteers to help in the exercise by allowing the troops to use their
land or be a part of the training as “role players”.
Edgefield County Sheriff Adell Dobey has signed a “memorandum of
understanding” with the training force as has the Town of Edgefield
including the Edgefield Police Department and Mr. Young was seeking the
same from the Edgefield County Council.
Councilman Joel Hudson asked if the military had considered the large
hunting population in the area that uses the same lands. Mr. Young
stated that no matter what time of year the exercise is conducted there
is always some game that is in season for hunting but that they will be
working with the local Department of Natural Resources and Forestry
Service to take necessary advisement to hunters and the safety of
troops. The first training exercise will be conducted from April 3
through April 11, which is turkey season.
A second exercise will be conducted in May but the dates have not been
announced.
The County Council approved to sign on to the agreement.
Landowners in the area, stated as lands between Woodlawn Road and
Garrett Road in and around the Sumter National Forrest, or to
volunteer, can call Christopher Young, (CTR) at 910-440-0014 for more
information.
