US Census Bureau seeks to employ 50 in county

web posted December 3, 2008
COUNTY – Need a good paying job? The US Census Bureau is looking for a few good employees in Edgefield County, fifty to be exact. Gladys Sligh, with the US Census Bureau, addressed the Edgefield County Council Tuesday night explaining that they are seeking Census workers for the 2010 census that is currently underway and offers jobs that pay between $11 and $17 an hour.

Mrs. Sligh said the positions would last between five to ten weeks and they offer free training, mileage reimbursement, and some full time positions.

The 2010 census is currently underway, a process she said actually takes four years to accomplish, and each applicant must register for testing that is conducted each Monday beginning at 10 am at the Edgefield Town Hall. “We’d like for (applicants) to contact us beforehand, but we will accept walk-ins,” Mrs. Sligh said.

Those interested in applying for the jobs should call toll free 1-866-861-2010 for more information or apply in person at the Edgefield Town Hall each Monday by 10 am. Testing will take about a half an hour but applicants are asked to reserve about an hour and a half of their time.

“Not everyone is willing to knock on doors,” Mrs. Sligh said, “but we have other jobs where they don’t have to.”

Applicants are asked to bring their drivers license and Social Security card at the time of application.

A Classified Employment ad will be placed on Wednesday during the hiring process.
