Cell towers latest target of copper thefts
web
posted December 17, 2008
COUNTY – Copper thieves have begun to
strike again in Edgefield County and have chosen a new target. Rather
than striking over a dozen Aiken-Electric Co-Op substations as they did
in September and
October of this year, they have now turned their
attention to cell phone towers. So far the thieves have caused over
$10,000 in damage in order to steal less than $100 in copper.
Edgefield County Sheriff’s Investigators have worked two cases in the
past two days with similarities to the earlier thefts. The first report
came in on Monday afternoon at a cell phone tower on Highway 23 north.
At that tower location, shared by Al-Tel and Version, the thieves cut
the lock to the gate and then entered the compound and cut copper
grounding wires at the location and the two site buildings.
Some of the wire was hidden from view inside PVC conduit and the pipe
was cut to remove the wire. The scrap value of the copper was estimated
to be around $50 while the damage to each of the buildings rose to
$5,000. The last time the site had been checked by workers was said to
be in October.
Midday Tuesday Investigators were called out to the second tower with a
repeat investigation on Mt. Pleasant Road in Edgefield. The thieves
left the cut padlock, cut piping, and took the same copper wire and
“grounding plates”. According to investigative reports the damages at
the second site also surpassed $5,000 with very little in copper wiring
being taken.
The last time the second tower had been visited by workers was earlier
this month.
Due to the type of evidence being colleted it is believed the thefts
are very recent, possibly in the last few days. Other such tower
locations are being patrolled.
In 2007 the popular target of copper thefts was heating
and air conditioners units at churches that left over $50,000 in
damages at about a dozen locations. From there thieves turned
their thefts on commercial heating and
air conditioners at companies.
