Edgefield County Quiet Over Christmas

web posted December 27, 2013

COUNTY While the Christmas holiday usually results in an up tick in crimes, burglaries, thefts, and DUI's, this year was markedly different. Although there were at least two burglaries leading up to the holiday, that number is down from previous years. The best statistic during this year is that there were no DUI arrests over the holiday period.

In 2012 there were three DUI arrests for the days surrounding Christmas. In 2011 there were also three. There were also no major collisions or crashes during the same time period this year.

In 2011 a non-DUI related Christmas Day collision claimed the life of 5-month-old Ziare Smith, of Muncie, Indiana, at the intersection of Highway 25 south (Edgefield Road) and Trailside Drive. 2011 was the deadliest year on Edgefield County roads with a total of 11 fatalities since Edgefield Daily began keeping records in 2005.

According to Conerstone, in 2009 Edgefield County ranked 6th in the state for collisions related to DUI's per capita.

Edgefield Daily is happy to report the lack of crime and DUI's over the holiday rather than reporting bad news. Sometimes no news is good news.
