KIA could bring 2,500 jobs to area
web posted December 28, 2005

KIA Motor Corporation has named Aiken County as a location in the creation of its first United States assembly plant. The announcement could lead to the addition of over 1,000 jobs and as many as 1,500. After further evaluations KIA has expanded that prognostication to be as many as 2,500 jobs.

According to Automotive News KIA has named five sites which include; Aiken, S.C, Hopkinsville, Ky., Decatur, Ala., Chattanooga, Tenn. KIA and is also considering two sites in Mississippi.

The news of more higher paying jobs for Edgefield County residents would be good news with the announcement that unemployment for the county has risen to over 9% for the last quarter. Officials from KIA as well as Aiken County are not commenting on the announcement.

The location of the prospective site is just off I-20 not far from the Edgefield County line near Trenton.
