Pastor
sends "Open Letter" to County Council and area Mayors
web posted December 29, 2005 To All Elected Officials: Mayor’s Bob McKie, Dean Campbell and Helen Summer and County Councilmen, and all others concerned. I am writing, In regards to ending hunger: In Edgefield County SC CSRA,. It is our pleasure and honor to invite you to observer our programs in action. The support of our town, county state official and government official would send a message of caring to our communities On January 7, 2006 at 140 Beaver Dam Creek Community Room from 9-11 am. 5,000lbs. of free fresh produces and bread will be giving away starting Jan.14, 2006 every Sat. morning 9-11am a Free hot meal on site for all senior citizens and families of the Country Manor, Medical Park, Edgewood and Beaver Dam Creek community at 191 W.A. Reel Dr. Edgefield. Charlie and Patricia Wilson are the founders and Pastors of Alpha and Omega Outreach Inc. Ministries, which is a non-profit organization. Self -Funded .Located in Edgefield County, SC. We are a community- oriented church, mission, reaching beyond the walls assessing the needs of the community and responding appropriately to those needs. We find that many of recipients of the community live in poverty, because of this, a newly initiated program called the Mama’s Truck started six month ago, a 5,000 lbs. free fresh produces and bread program, and became a partner with Golden Harvest Food Bank of Aiken. There is no question that hunger is rampant in America, Dr. Larry Brown, Director of the center on hunger, Poverty, and Nutrition Policy at Tufts University States simply that “Hunger is now at epidemic levels.” The statistics are startling as we all no: In economically pressed communities, there are many individuals and families who qualify for emergency food (e.g. food stamps and WIC vouchers) but for a variety of reasons do not access these programs. There are even more individuals and families who do not qualify for emergency food who are without food due to low paying jobs, abnormally high housing costs, and an ever rising cost of living. The Alpha and Omega’s Mama’s Truck plays a significant role combating hunger and giving away each month 5,000 lbs of free fresh produces, bread and emergency food for those with limited financial means. It does so in a manner which encourages community involvement, unfortunate today there are many who go hungry, or else feed themselves at cost which leaves little in saving. The efforts of the Mama’s truck are to enable many poor and lower income families to feed themselves with great ease, when they might otherwise have done so only with great financial difficulty. As we move towards effectively helping our community, We take pride in knowing that a donation to Alpha and omega is a valuable investment into our community long term success:. Mama’s Truck does not simply help people. It helps people to help themselves.” The dilemma of food versus rent or food versus heat is very real in most economically depressed communities. Many folks have been laid off from work, and they don’t know how to deal with it…and we’re looking at a disaster. They are going to have to choose between heating and eating. The irony is that in America we need not choose between “heatin’ and eatin.” Experts agree that with the food we waste we could feed every hungry American.” Food waste in the U.S. annually is more than 137 million tons, equivalent to a highway of tractor trailer trucks, bumper to bumper, stretching three times around the world. Sincerely, Submitted Elder Charlie Wilson, And Pastor Patricia Wilson For
