Brown accepts job as County Administrator

web posted December 30, 2009
COUNTY – It seems Edgefield County will have a new County Administrator for 2010 with Alton Brown verbally accepting the job offer by the Edgefield County Council on Tuesday. Interim Administrator Barbara Stark said until Mr. Brown returns from visiting family in Oklahoma and signs the contract the acceptance is considered an “agreement in principle”.

The process to select a new county administrator has been ongoing since October.

The vote to offer to Mr. Brown the position came after an executive session meeting on November 17. From there the negotiations continued for another six weeks until Brown finally unofficially accepted the offer by phone.

“Until he signs the contract, it is just an agreement in principle,” Interim Administrator Barbara Stark said Tuesday, although she said she was hopeful Mr. Brown would take over as of February 1 and she could return to her duties as Clerk to Council. She also said she was looking forward to working with Mr. Brown.

Merriwether County Councilwoman Genia Blackwell expressed similar optimism.

“The county council worked very hard to choose the best candidate for our county and this reflects the good things can happen when we all work together,” she said. “I am truly excited that Edgefield County will have an experienced and knowledgeable Administrator to serve the citizens of our County. Mr. Brown will no doubt be an asset to the morale of our workforce and a great resource to the citizens. It will be rewarding to have the much-needed leadership the position requires. I look forward to working with him.”

Mr. Brown did not return a call on his cell phone for comment on Tuesday, as he is visiting family in the Oklahoma for the birth of a grandchild. Mrs. Stark said Mr. Brown is scheduled to return to Edgefield in mid-January to finalize the contract.

Mr. Brown will be the first County Administrator hired from outside the county in over three decades.
