Shooting victim airlifted to trauma unit, one man in custody web posted August 2, 2006 The bullet was said to have entered the upper right portion of the man’s back and exited the man’s chest area. Sheriff’s Deputies and Investigators arrived on the scene within minutes and secured the area allowing EMS personnel to tend to the injured man. Working in near 100 degree heat the man was stabilized while waiting on an AirMed helicopter to arrive to transport the man to the MCG Trauma Unit in Augusta. all traffic on Highway 25 was brought to a halt in order to provide a lnding area for the helicopter. The victim's condition was unavailable. The teen’s identity is not being released at this time due to his age, however, if charged as an adult Corporal Robbie Harter said the Sheriff’s Office would release the name. The charges will depend on the Solicitor’s Office Cpl. Harter said. The charges will likely include possession of a gun during the commission of a crime and possibly assault and battery with intent to kill. “We won’t know until the Solicitor looks at the case,” Cpl. Harter said. Due to the intense heat, the two Edgefield County EMS workers that treated the victim on the scene began to show signs of overheating and a short time later both were being treated by First Responders until additional EMS personnel and another ambulance could arrive and transport them to be treated at University Hospital. They were reported to be recovering and in good condition after being released. The Aiken County bloodhound used to track the suspect was also treated at the staging area set up at the County Line Fire Station due to the heat. Aiken County Animal Control started an IV to give the dog fluids as he laid in front of a misting fan and was cooled by a waterhose. Police are still searching for the gun used in the shooting.
