Employees say they knew of Deputy's habbits

Staff reporting

Former employees at Sportsman’s Corner, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated they knew Deputy Demeter was allegedly pilfering items at the store and had informed the new management of his activities. They said they never pressed the issue for fear he would use his position as a law enforcement officer to harass them or worse since it was their word against his.

Two said they watched as he would allegedly pilfer items while, “hanging around” in the store. Sportsman’s Corner is the only local outpost in Merriwether for convenience items and gas. Until the upgrade in video surveillance it was, “always our word against his,” as one clerk said, “and who are they (the police and courts) going to believe?”

Sportsman’s, as it is known as by local residents, has been the focus of a rash of thefts and has taken great strides to reduce those thefts.

Cameras are now mounted on the interior and exterior of the building to reduce the number of drive-offs at the gas pumps and thefts by customers as well as employees inside. Frequently there are several drive-offs a night as the gas prices continue to rise. Some workers feared it would just get worse without the video available to show the theft was by others and not by them falsifying drive-offs for personal gain.

The former employees stated they used to have those amounts deducted from their pay. ”We basically told them (management) if we couldn’t make people pay first we weren’t going to be responsible anymore”, said one of the employees. That rule has since been discontinued current employees said.
