SC DOT worker loses both legs in highway
accident Edgefielddaily.com web posted May 6, 2005 A South Carolina Department of Transportation worker lost both his legs in an accident on Highway 28 in McCormick County. Around 8:15 am on Friday, May 6, SCDOT maintenance crew member James Worden was placing signs on the shoulder of the road warning of mowing when a vehicle ran off the highway and slammed into the vehicle Worden drove pinning him between the two vehicles. Both his legs were severed in the accident. SC DOT District Engineering Administrator Phillip Brooks said, “he is in stable condition at MCG and is conscious, awake and talking.” McCormick County rescue workers stabilized Worden at the scene as a Medivac helicopter was called in to transport him to MCG. DOT officials say they are unsure of what caused the driver of the vehicle that struck the parked SC DOT vehicle to leave the roadway. DOT Safety spokesman John Gaither said SC DOT keeps up with the number of injuries and fatalities of work zone related accidents. This year’s numbers are not completed at this time; however in 2004, “there were 18 fatalities and 506 injuries to both SC DOT employees and motorists,” he said. “Compliance to lower speeds in work zone areas are usually a main contributor to such accidents,” Gaither added. Worden’s condition remains the stable at this writing. The identity and condition of the motorist who struck the worker have not been released at this time. Edgefield Daily.com will follow up on the story as more information is released. Return to Main Page
