What’s In It For Me?
By: Dr. Skip Myers
web posted September 25, 2006
The question surrounding anything that someone does is, “What’s in it for me?” Let’s face it we all need the proper motivation to do what is needed. Taken to the extreme this question does reveal a personal arrogance that can prohibit us from experiencing what the Lord has for us. But if we can have this question adequately answered it can serve to motivate us to everything from dieting to beginning a relationship with the Lord.
You may not realize all the incredible motivational tools and benefits we gain from God when we come to Him. There are more than most of us take the time to realize and experience but they are all here for us to know. Many may think that heaven is all there is to a relationship with Jesus but actually it is just the beginning (and the fulfillment) of a myriad of unbelievable things we can become in Christ.
So, for your benefit and mine I would like to offer the following list of things we have the opportunity to experience in Christ. Let me suggest that you take these over the next few days or weeks and read the scripture passage listed. These are truths of God’s Word not something made up in the minds of others. They are there for you to experience and become. All it takes is a relational connection with Christ and a desire for His image to be grown in your life. The reality is His but the desire has to come from you.
IN CHRIST WE ARE: Able (Philippians 4:13); Accepted (Romans 12:2); Adopted (Romans 8:15-16; Ephesians 1:4-5); Alive (Ephesians 2:4-6; Colossians 2:13-15); Ambassadors (2 Corinthians 5:17-21); Anointed (1 John 2:27); Blameless (Colossians 1:21-22; Ephesians 1:3-4); Blessed (Ephesians 1:3-4); Called (Ephesians 4:1-3; 2 Timothy 1:8-9); Chosen (Colossians 3:12-14; 2 Thessalonians 2:13); Church (Ephesians 1:22-23; Romans 12:4-5); Cleansed (1 John 1:7-9); Clothed (Colossians 3:9-10; Galatians 3:27; Ephesians 4:20-24); Complete (maturing) (Colossians 2:9-10; James 1:2-4); Convicted—made aware of sin in our lives (John 16:7-11); Crucified (Galatians 2:20; Galatians 5:24-25);
IN CHRIST WE ARE: Disciplined (Hebrews 12:7-11); Encouraged (Hebrews 3:13-14); Enlightened (Ephesians 1:17-20); Eternal (Romans 6:23; 1 John 5:11-12); Filled (Philippians 1:9-11; Ephesians 5:18; Colossians 1:9-10); Forgiven (Colossians 1:13-14; Ephesians 1:7-8); Free (John 8:31-32; Romans 8:1-2); Friends (John 15:15).
This is just part one of a list that will be shared with you over the next several weeks. Just to let you know this list isn’t a product of simply going to a concordance and listing their entries. This list is a product of my personal desire to understand more of who I am in Christ. Like me, you may get tired of this world trying to make you believe that you are unworthy or incapable. Knowing who we are because of our relationship with Christ can bring new energy and strength to everyday life.
Take these items seriously. Read the scripture and let the Lord speak to you. Remember, you already are these things in Christ. As humans, we do have to grow in our realization and utilization of them. As you experience new joy through your time with God, you may want to express that with others. Try putting the new you into a local church. Celebrating with others can be even more fun than celebrating alone. I’ll see you Sunday.
