The One and Only One and Only

I can only think of two things that are truly unique. You are one of those truly unique creations. There is not another one like you. Sure, there may be other men or women, but none of them possess your DNA, personality , or the stunning good looks you see in the mirror each morning.

While we may attribute uniqueness to other things, they are at best a simple variation on a theme. Take for instant the Hope Diamond. It may be unique in quality and size but it is basically a diamond that has the same make up as any other diamond. Even designer originals such as clothes or cars offer elements of uniqueness but they serve the same purpose and are made of basically the same materials.

We, as humans, are truly unique. There is not another one like me. (Go ahead, it’s okay to say thank goodness there’s only one of me.) No two of us are exactly alike. As of 10:15 am on September 28th, the world population was approximately 6,556,633,600! And not two people in this amazing number are exactly alike. That’s why God puts so much value on human life. We are not only His greatest creation, but we were made in His image as well: complete uniqueness.

Uniqueness and value are inseparably joined in our eyes. The more unique something is, the more value we attribute to it. The more unique it is, the more we tend to put it on display. The only other truly unique thing is God! He is the authentic one and only. Therefore, because God is the very definition of uniqueness, we should attribute to Him a degree of value unlike any other element in our lives. Furthermore, we should display Him proudly in our lives since He is totally unique and has blessed us with the opportunity to be in a relationship with Him.

A well-know theologian once described God as “divinely other.” This is certainly a definition of God that deserves to be investigated. What he is describing in this term is the uniqueness of God. I truly believe that if a person wants to have their relationship with the Lord elevated to new heights there is one particular aspect of God that must be realized and experienced. And yet, this one aspect of His nature is usually misunderstood and overlooked.

When we understand the holiness of God, our relationship with Him takes on new dimensions. What is holiness? It is simply a recognition and utilization of the uniqueness of God in our lives. Holiness is not meant to widen the distance between us and God. It is meant to assist us in recognizing the divine uniqueness of God. Deuteronomy 6:4-5: Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all you heart and with all your soul and with all your might.  Exodus 20:3: You shall have no other gods before Me. (One of the Ten Commandments)

We come into an understanding of the holiness of God when we accept His divine uniqueness and realize this entitles Him to be loved supremely and given the control of our lives.  Experiencing holiness enables us to reject other things that attempt to be god. We realize they do not possess the ability to love us perfectly and bring us freedom. Coupling the uniqueness of God with the experience of holiness enables us to direct our love towards only One. We love the Lord with all we are and allow our love for others to flow and be filtered through His holiness. We then offer them a unique love that reflects the very love God showed us through Christ.

Uniqueness and holiness empower placement. Where have you placed the Lord in your life? Our placement reflects the uniqueness and value we attribute to Him. Make sure He’s not just one of the many things that have been given a piece of controlling interest in your life. There’s only room for one driver and too many cooks will spoil the meal. Since He is the One and Only, why not give Him your life and put Him on display for others to see. He alone deserves the throne of our lives. Clean the clutter off the throne and offer it to The One who can do what no other can.
