What’s In It For Me: Part 3
By: Dr. Skip Myers
web posted October 30, 2006
Who am I? This is certainly one of those universal questions we spend a lifetime attempting to answer. How we choose to define our lives will determine to a large degree what we accomplish in life. And it’s not just a matter of how we define our lives but who defines our lives as well. The relationships we consider most influential affect us in ways we may not recognize.
We all have those people whose presence just makes us feel good about ourselves. These are the people who believe in us and the potential that is within us. They make us better than we would be without them. There is no substitute for the joy these relationships bring to us. And yet, we are so quick to push their positive influence aside in favor of those whose influence is anything but positive. These are the people whose words cast doubt upon our abilities and self-worth. These people inflate their own superficial self-worth by deflating the very foundational beliefs we hold about who we are. And we replay their words over and over again until we believe them.
People are fallible. We are great at building our lives up by keeping others down. Let me suggest that you begin to define your life by those relationships that believe in you and what you are capable of doing. This is not Pop Psychology. It is a principle as old as the Bible. The Bible reveals to us how the Lord defines our lives. Many have restricted this definition to the sin we possess but remember, the cross took care of our sin and we are expected to redefine our lives by what the Lord has done for us through the cross. Our relationship with Him is to become our primary defining relationship.
We have spent the last two weeks looking at who we are in Christ. It is my hope that you are beginning to realize just how much the Lord loves you. I hope you are beginning to realize just who you are in His eyes and that you are more to the Lord than a pile of sin. Continue to explore these scriptures and begin to see yourself through the incredible love of the Lord.
IN CHRIST WE ARE: Royalty (1 Peter 2:9); Sacrifice (Romans 12:1; Hebrews 13:15); Salt (Matthew 5:13; Mark 9:50); Sanctified (I Thessalonians 5:23-24; 1 Peter 3:15); Saved (John 3:16; Romans 10:9; Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:5); Sealed (2 Corinthians 1:21-22: Ephesians 1:13-14); Secure (John 10:29-30: Jude 1:24); Teachers (1 Peter 3:15; Hebrews 5:11-12); Testimony (Acts 1:8; 1 Timothy 1:8-9; 1 John 5:10-11); Transformed (Romans 12:1-2; 2 Corinthians 3:18); Vessel (2 Timothy 2:21); Victorious (1Corinthians 15:57; 1 John 5:4); Warriors (Ephesians 6:11-17; 2 Timothy 2:4); Wealthy (Colossians 2:2-3; I Timothy 6:18-19); Wise (1 Corinthians 1:30-31; Ephesians 5:15-16; 2 Timothy 3:14-15; James 1:5-8); Yoked (Matthew 11:28-29; Galatians 5:1)
There you have it! This is just a small portion of who we are in Christ. And there is not a negative one in the entire list. Stop getting your information about God second-hand. Go to the Bible and see for yourself. You just might find out that this God you have been avoiding all these years is Someone you can trust with your life. If you want to know more find a church Sunday and join in the praise. When we know who we are in Christ we truly have something to praise Him for. I’ll see you Sunday.
