Building and Planning Director, Zoning Administrator not guessing on outcome

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted July 8, 2005

As Edgefield Daily.com follows up on the county permit denial of Rodney Cato we spoke with Building and Planning Director Howard Gibson and Zoning Administrator Guy Mueller and confirmed the report.

Mr. Gibson stated he was in a meeting at the time Mr. Cato was filing for the permit and was contacted by staff, “I knew when my cell phone rang during a meeting it was important,” he said. Gibson said he had standing orders not to grant the permit by the County Administrator. “I had no choice but to follow orders,” Gibson told Edgefield Daily.com.

A letter has been sent as Mr. Cato requested Mr. Gibson said also confirming the report Mr. Cato had met with Administrator Adams. He was unaware of what that meeting accomplished if anything.

On the issue of the zoning ordinances Zoning Director Guy Mueller said he has no idea how the planning commission will vote next week. “I wish the meeting was tonight,“ he said, “the anticipation of what the meeting will be like is too much.” Mueller said that he wished the council had gone about things in a different manner and the situation it put the commission in was not one they preferred.

Mr. Gibson agreed saying it has put them in an “uncomfortable position” and that he wished the council would have handled it the way “we have been handling the Sweetwater Road zoning,” he said, “a good slow and professional manner. Get in touch with the people involved.”

As to how the planning commission would handle the situation Mr. Gibson said, “I wouldn’t even begin to offer a guess.” Only two of the present planning commission members were on the commission in the zoning debate of 1999-2000; Chairman Burt and Roger Timpson but Mr. Gibson said that all agreed any other zoning in the county would be handled the right way, “We learned our lesson,” in the way things were handled then he told Edgefield Daily.com previously.

Mr. Gibson and Mr. Mueller both agreed that the hard work the commission and their departments have accomplished to restore public trust over the last several years could be dissolved in one vote over the zoning ordinances. “Yes, I worry about that,” Gibson said.

The matter will be taken up next week at the regular scheduled meeting Thursday, July 14, 2005 at the Council Chambers on Jeter St. The meeting will begin at 6:30 pm and the public is invited to attend and comment. “We always invite public comments on everything we do,” Zoning Administrator Guy Mueller said.
