Additional Charge Filed Against Durham
web posted January 3, 2013
EDGEFIELD – At least one more charge has
been filed against Debra Durham as a result of two brushes with law
enforcement this past Sunday night. In addition to the charge of
trespassing after notice, Durham was charged with reckless driving,
however; none of the charges show up on the court's online records at
this time. It could take days until the charges are processed and then
listed.
According to Edgefield County Sheriff's Capt. Chris Wash, there will be
no additional charges that are being considered by the Sheriff's Office
due to an
uncooperative victim. Since the Sheriff's Office was responsible for
placing her on trespass notice an hour earlier, that is the only charge
they can file under the circumstances.
Prior to the second call regarding Durham being back at the man's house
with a gun, a Sheriff's deputy spotted Durham driving at a high rate of
speed and refused to stop for blue lights. Durham drove over 5 miles
ignoring the deputy's blue lights and passing at least 25 driveways or
areas that would have been safe to pull over until she reached the Republican Road man's home.
The reckless driving charge was filed by the State Highway Patrol, who
worked the investigation of the roll over crash when Durham left the
roadway and struck a tree as she fled the scene after shooting her
pistol.
Mrs. Durham, who is a teacher and 2011 Teacher of the Year at JET
Middle School, is said to be on medical leave and away from her
teaching duties for the time being.
Edgefield County School Superintendent Greg Anderson said he would have
a statement released later this week about the situation.
"Every school district employee knows we have a zero tolerance for
an employee that shows a 'propensity for violence' in public," Anderson
said when we contacted him on Monday to inform him of the breaking news
report by Edgefield Daily that would be filed the following day. He
said it was premature to speak in regards to Durham saying the school
district would be collecting official reports and doing their own
review of the incidents.
If needed, a press release will be issued if action is taken by the
School District.
