Edgefield County Native and 4th Oldest Person in the World Dies at 114

EDGEFIELD – Mamie Lewis Rearden, the 4th oldest person in the world, has died following a hospital stay in Augusta, Georgia, Edgefield Daily has confirmed. Mrs. Rearden, born September 7, 1898 as Mamie Julia Lewis, and grew up in the Pleasant Lane Section of Edgefield County. She never lived more than a few miles from where she was born. She was 114 years and 116 days old at the time of her death.

Edgefield County Deputy Coroner David Burnett said Rearden died Wednesday night.

Mamie Julia Lewis Rearden grew up in the Pleasant Lane section of Edgefield. She attended the Log Creek Community School and Bettis Academy Junior College and began her career as a teacher in 1918. In 1919, Rearden married Ocay Rearden, and the couple had eleven children.

She was widowed in 1979. She became the nation's oldest African-American upon the death of Mississippi Winn on January 14, 2011.

Her daughter, Mrs. Hamilton, is 96 years old and was the oldest person in the world to still have a living parent in 2012. In September of 2012 Mrs. Rearden became only the 91st person to reach the age of 114. She was honored by the Edgefield County Council through a Resolution in October of 2012 for her longevity.
