Merriwether Woman injured in Single Car Crash
web posted January 5, 2013
EDGEFIELD – A Merriwether woman
was
transported to the Trauma Center following a single vehicle crash on
Sweetwater Road around 3:30 Friday afternoon after purportedly swerving
to miss an animal that darted across the road. The woman lost control
of the Dodge Stratus which veered across the northbound lane and went
down a steep embankment and rolling at least once.
According to information obtained on the scene, the woman and her
husband were heading southbound on Sweetwater Road when the animal,
believed to be a deer, darted out in front of the car just north of
Mays Way. The woman swerved off the right-hand side of the roadway and
then overcorrected trying to get back on the road.
Although wearing a seatbelt, the woman was thrown from the driver's
seat into the back seat on the passenger side of the car. She was
complaining of neck, rib, arm, and leg pain. A First Responder began
treating the injured woman until Edgefield Fire crews and EMS could
arrive on the scene.
Rescuers gently placed the woman on a backboard and transported her to
the hospital. Her husband, who was a passenger in the car, was also
wearing a seatbelt and was uninjured.
All traffic on Sweetwater Road was blocked for a little over half an
hour during the rescue. The woman was said to be in stable condition at
the she was transported.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
