Traffic Stop Leads to arrest of Wanted Felon with Loaded Handgun

web posted January 8, 2013

EDGEFIELD – An Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputy on patrol spotted a black Lexus traveling at a "high rate of speed" on Highway 25 north Sunday night. The deputy conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Highway 25 and Parkman Road. The deputy noted that the passenger, 22-year-old Brandon Chapelle Johnson, appeared to be "very nervous" and would not make eye contact with the deputy.

The deputy explained to the female driver the reason for the traffic stop and requested her license, registration and proof of insurance. Two Edgefield Police Officers arrived to provide back-up for the deputy due to the suspicious nature of Johnson. When an officer asked for Johnson's identification he said he did not have any and would only give his first name, according to an incident report.

The deputy requested the Sheriff's K-9 unit to respond and following an exterior search of the vehicle the drug dog alerted on the passenger and driver's side doors. The driver and Johnson were asked to step to the rear of the vehicle and were taken into investigative custody during a search of the car.

During the search Johnson's identification was found and a records check showed he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest out of Georgia with "full extradition".  Also discovered during the search was a loaded .38 caliber Smith & Wesson handgun with an obliterated serial number, burnt marijuana cigarettes in a cup and a metal tube that looks like a cigarette commonly referred to as a "one hitter" inside the car.

Johnson claimed all the evidence found belonged to him, the report stated.

After confirming the extradition on the outstanding warrant, the Sheriff's Deputy arrested Johnson on a charge of simple possession of marijuana and pending warrants of unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon of a violent crime and unlawful carry of a firearm with obliterated serial number.

The female driver was issued a warning ticket for speeding and was allowed to leave the scene.
