Theft of purse leads to felony charge

web posted January 18, 2007

EDGEFIELD – A theft of a purse in Edgefield on Friday has led to warrants being issued against an Edgefield man, one of them a felony warrant. Edgefield Police took the initial complaint Friday afternoon. According to the Edgefield woman she stopped at the Amoco on Main Street and while she was inside a man went inside her car and stole her purse. When she discovered the theft she went back to the store and reviewed the surveillance tapes and recognized the man.

She located the man later on Gary Street and confronted him about the theft. The man reportedly cursed at her and began pointing his finger in her face. As the altercation progress the woman used a chair to defend herself from the man who then used a chicken bone to strike the woman causing a cut and a bump on her head. Police identified the man as Jeffery White, 30, of Morange St. in Edgefield.

Edgefield Police said Wednesday they have obtained a warrant for the assault and were seeking a second warrant for the theft from a motor vehicle, a felony. “That carries five years,” Lt. Mike Cockrell with the Edgefield Police Department said.  Mr. White was expected to turn himself in to authorities late Wednesday or early Thursday.
