‘Give Heat’ Project Raises Thousands of Dollars for Those in Need
web posted January 23, 2012
EDGEFIELD – Many citizens and groups
contributed to Edgefield County Chairman Dean Campbell’s “Give Heat”
project, aimed at helping low-income residents who don’t have enough
money to pay their utility bills, especially in the winter. The
Project, which began last fall, raised $4,225, as contributions
continue to come in.
Two of the single largest donors were the Heritage Festival in
Edgefield, which donated $2,000 from 2011 Festival proceeds, and Mt.
Vintage, which gave $1,000. However, many smaller donations came from
citizens across the county.
“I am greatly impressed and enthusiastic by the generosity of so many,
and I appreciate all who contributed,” Campbell said. “Edgefield County
citizens proved, once again, how much they really care for those who
need an extra hand.”
Campbell created this new Project for citizens to share with others by
donating money to assist in paying utility bills of those who really
need it. The Project directly supports the Edgefield County Department
of Social Services (DSS), which oversee the money to ensure only those
who need the financial assistance receive it.
Campbell noted that the Edgefield County 211 Helpline, sponsored by the
United Way of Edgefield County, shows that for the past two years the
number 1 plea for assistance is help paying utility bills. Other local
charities and government entities have some funds available to help,
but Campbell said they run out of money quickly because the needs
overwhelm these groups. The Helpline is designed to help callers find
assistance for needs they have.
While Edgefield County receives some federal money to help pay utility
bills of those who need it most, the amount of money has steadily
decreased while the need has risen. On a day-to-day basis, DSS
sees that help paying electrical bills, particularly in the wintertime,
is a significant need in Edgefield County.
While Project Give Heat is now over for this year, if citizens still
want to contribute, donations can be sent to the United Way of
Edgefield County (P.O. Box 72, Edgefield, SC 29824). Donations sent to
the United Way should be designated to the “Give Heat” Project. The
United Way will then pass the earmarked money to the local DSS.
